Launching PollutionData: Canadian GHG Emissions & Pollutant Releases API

Canadian data on industrial emissions and pollutant releases is public. Environment Canada publishes annual declarations from the Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program (GHGRP) and the National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI). But accessing this data programmatically has always been painful: bulk CSV downloads, incompatible formats, and two separate registries that require manual reconciliation.

PollutionData changes that.

What PollutionData does

PollutionData is a REST API that normalizes Canadian industrial environmental data into a clean, queryable format. Two entity types, one API:

  • GHG emissions (18,772 records, since 2004): every GHGRP declaration, by facility and year, including total CO2-equivalent tonnes, NAICS code, province, and GPS coordinates. In 2023, 1,862 facilities reported 290.6 Mt CO2e across Canada
  • Pollutant releases (1,062,532 records, since 1993): every NPRI release by substance (PM2.5, NOx, SO2, VOCs, heavy metals), medium (air, water, land), and facility

Over 1.08 million records covering three decades of industrial environmental monitoring in Canada.

Key features

  • Advanced filtering: search emissions by province, year, NAICS code, facility ID, or value range. Filter NPRI releases by substance, medium, and facility
  • Facility endpoint: retrieve the full declaration history of any facility by ID, across all available years
  • Geographic coordinates: every facility includes latitude and longitude for spatial analysis
  • Bilingual data: classification fields (NAICS sector, substance, medium) are available in English and French
  • Automated updates: pipelines pull new data from Environment Canada as it is published

Who PollutionData is for

PollutionData is built for developers and organizations working in these areas:

  • ESG firms and asset managers: integrate verified Scope 1 emissions for Canadian facilities into climate risk models and sustainability reporting
  • Insurers and underwriters: cross-reference a property's location with NPRI substance releases to assess industrial pollutant exposure
  • Environmental lawyers: access the full declaration history of a specific facility to document 20-year trends
  • Commercial real estate: evaluate proximity to high-emission sites before a transaction
  • Journalists and researchers: query thousands of facilities programmatically without manual downloads or file merging
